Professor Baek Seungpil from the Department of Bioinformatics at Korea University Sejong Campus received the 2024 Beyond Cell Academic Award. From September 25 to 27, the award ceremony took place during the general meeting of the Korean Society for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (KSBB) Annual Conference, held at the Jeju International Convention Center.
The Beyond Cell Academic Award, presented by KSBB, honors researchers who have made significant contributions to academic activities in the field of biotechnology and the nurturing of scientific and technological human resources. Each year, one researcher is selected and awarded at the conference and symposium, emphasizing the importance of advancing biotechnology.
Professor Baek was recognized with the 2024 Beyond Cell Academic Award for his outstanding research achievements and contributions to various academic activities. His research focuses on molecular design using DNA and proteins to address key issues in biopharmaceuticals, industrial biotechnology, and medical biotechnology. He also leads the Biological Clock-based Anti-Aging Convergence RLRC, a government-designated leading research center, where he drives bio-health research and development for regional innovation industries in Sejong City, particularly in the well-aging sector.
He has published over 170 SCI-level papers, with 45 of them in the past three years alone. Additionally, he has filed and registered over 50 patents and successfully completed 10 technology transfers, demonstrating the practical and commercial value of his research.
Professor Baek is also committed to nurturing scientific human resources. He operates corporate-linked capstone and problem-solving educational programs that enable students from various disciplines to participate, and he has implemented a community-based living lab to address regional issues such as stress and sleep improvement among local residents. These programs help students develop both scientific problem-solving and field collaboration skills simultaneously.
