On November 16, Korea University Sejong Campus announced that the AI film ‘Gulliver’s Travels to Yuldo’ has been selected as the opening film for the 6th Changwon International Democracy Film Festival. This is the first time a university produced AI film has been invited to an international film festival and chosen as its opening film.

The film merges the British author Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels’ with Yuldo, an ideal nation imagined by Heo Gyun during the Joseon Dynasty, to reinterpret utopian societies of the East and West through AI technology. Unlike traditional AI films, which often focus on science fiction or dystopian themes, this work combines the utopian imaginations of both Eastern and Western cultures in a unique historical drama format, exploring new storytelling possibilities. Furthermore, the film envisions AI technology as a tool to uphold universal human values, offering a utopian imagination that transcends conflict and discrimination, promising to deeply resonate with audiences.

What makes this film even more significant is that everyone involved in its production is a member of Korea University. Under the leadership of Research Professor Park Jinho from the ARMR System/Content Convergence Technology Education Research Team in BrainKorea21 FOUR Project’s, students Kim Juhyun, Hong Hyun, and Cho Eunsol from the Department of Applied Physics wrote the screenplay. Visuals for each scene were completed using AI generation programs developed by AMIZ Media, a production company led by Korea University alumnus So Huisu. Additionally, Professor Lee Yoonjin from the Faculty of Global Studies contributed to refining the core philosophy of Yuldoyism(a cultural equality ideology).

Following its screening at the Changwon International Democracy Film Festival, AI Film Round Talk was held, featuring Research Professor Park, Professor Lee, Director So, and film critic Jeon Chanil. The discussion delved into the impact of AI technology on art and the significance of merging utopian ideals from the East and West.

Research Professor Park stated, “This film is an excellent example of how AI technology, combined with humanistic imagination, can open up new artistic possibilities. We will continue working with the members of Korea University to ensure that AI technology serves as a tool for embracing diverse voices in artistic creation and realizing universal human values.”
